Hawaii Pacific University Athletics and the Center for Student Life and First-Year Programs will host the HPU seventh annual Halloween Hoopla starting at 5 p.m. Friday in the makai parking lot of the Blaisdell Arena. The event features inflatable attractions, adult and keiki costume contests, trick or treating, food, and performances by the HPU national champion cheer and dance teams. The 19th annual Leeward Community College Family Fun Fair takes place Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Pearl City campus. Free admission and parking is available for the event, which features games, interactive exhibits, food and entertainment. Twelve puaiohi, or small Kauai thrush, were released into the forest of Kauai last week, marking 10 years of raising and releasing the endangered birds. The rare puaiohi is only found in Kauai's Alakai Wilderness Preserve.

The release brings the total number of captive-bred puaiohi released into the wild to 188. Scientists will monitor the birds' movements and survival rate for 30 days, the life span of the batteries in a radio transmitter attached to each bird.

The Oahu Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will hold a Howl-O-Ween open house and adoption day event Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at their Kalaeloa Facility, Building 1142 on Roosevelt Avenue.

Visitors can tour the facility, vote for their favorite shelter dog in a costume contest, and find out more information about adopting, fostering, volunteering, or becoming a member.
