Man dies of an apparent drowning in Pokai Bay

A man in his 50s was pulled from Pokai Bay today by county lifeguards, but later died of an apparent drowning at a nearby hospital, an EMS spokesman said.

The man was brought in by lifeguards at 3:09 p.m. Paramedics took over his treatment and transported him to a nearby hospital, said Bryan Cheplic, city Emergency Services Department spokesman. He was pronounced dead a short time after being brought to the hospital, Cheplic said.

Åccording to the National Weather Service, the surf along west-facing shores will remain 1-3 feet through Monday.
