Bishop Museum will end its 2008 Hula Film Festival tonight with "Aloha from Paris." The documentary film is based on a Paris Hula Hlau that became a source of inspiration and influence within the contemporary art world of Paris.

Kumu hula Kilohana Silve, of Hlau Hula O Mnoa, will be a guest speaker, accompanied by her hlau. She spent 25 years teaching hula in Paris, France.
"Hula keeps us in touch with nature in the middle of the city. We escape the traffic and crowded Metro as we visualize the beauty of misty rains, mountain peaks, and shimmering sea," said Silve. "In a cosmopolitan city like Paris, there are many different religious beliefs; so great care must be given as to how hula is presented. In our hlau, the emphasis is on history and cultural understanding."
Silve's hula hlau is in Honolulu where they recently took part in the Waikiki Invitational Hula Festival. The group was awarded the George A.K. Holokai Aloha Award for exemplifying a true spirit of aloha and kkua. The hlau will perform following the film on Tuesday night.
