Monday, 12/15/08 Marks the 217th Anniversary of its Ratification

Honolulu The American Civil Liberties Union of Hawai'i (ACLU) is seeking volunteers to help give away free copies of the Bill of Rights in downtown Honolulu, Hilo, Lihue and Wailuku. The public giveaway is planned for 11:30AM to 1:00PM on Monday, December 15th, 2008. Businesses or organizations willing to act as a pick-up point for copies of the Bill of Rights are also welcome.

The program celebrates Bill of Rights Day. Monday, December 15, 2008, marking the 217th anniversary of its ratification. The Bill of Rights was added to the federal Constitution and ratified on December 15,1791. In 1941, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt declared December 15 to be "Bill of Rights Day", a national holiday commemorating the 150th anniversary of the ratification.

The mission of the Hawai'i affiliate of the ACLU is to protect the civil liberties contained in the state and federal constitutions through litigation, legislative and public education programs statewide. The ACLU is funded primarily through private donations and offers its services at no cost to the public. The ACLU does not accept any government funds.
