Hale Makua was presented with a check for $10,000 from The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation for a Weinberg Friends 2008 Project where Kahului Rotary Club members worked alongside Hale Makua residents to beautify their courtyards at the Kahului location. In addition to installing a drip irrigation system, Rotarians spent the day with residents planting of over 100 planters with colorful flowers, foliage, and herbs.

This project is one of the many projects made possible through Hale Makua's Luana Campaign, the goal of which is to create a more homelike environment for residents and clients. Hale Makua continues to work toward the creation of a community where life revolves around close and continuing contact with plants, animals, and children. This type of environment assists in preventing the plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom that account for the bulk of suffering among our Elders. Residents and families are very excited about the Weinberg Friends project, and are looking forward to creating a "Garden Club" that will monitor and care for the plants.
