A county news release said Preston Ramson was headed west on Kaumualii Highway when the car he was driving left the road, clipped a utility pole and the end of Omao Bridge and plunged to the bottom of a 40-foot ravine.

The vehicle was discovered by patrol officers at 1:37 this morning.

Both lanes of Kaumualii were closed following the crash and traffic was re-routed until about 7:50 am.

Police say speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.

Ramson is the eighth traffic fatality on Kauai so far this year.
