About two dozen students showed up at two Furlough Friday sites operated by Kamaaina Kids at Kaneohe District Park and Ahuimanu Elementary School.

Arriving about 6:45 a.m. students got busy with puzzles, games and drawing as others trickled in, but the numbers weren't expected to increase by much more.

At Kaneohe only one student dropped in that hadn't pre-registered and at Ahuimanu three students dropped in.

The students said they were happy to have the break from a regular school day.

"I like school," said Kaitlyn Duke, 10. "But I like a day off to hang out and relax."

Kaitlyn's group, however, wouldn't be just relaxing.

Lisa Kaiwi, site coordinator at Kaneohe, said she planned some reading and math along with other activities.
