Transit tax behind schedule

Honolulu transit tax collections fell about 5 percent to an estimated $160.9 million in the past 12 months as the local economy weakened. Collections had been expected to rise 11 percent to $188 million but wound up $27.1 million lower than forecast. The shortfall in transit tax collections are minimal when compared with the project's overall cost of $5.4 billion. More »

State takes in $8.4M in delinquent taxes

The state collected $8.4 million from taxpayers during its monthlong amnesty program as the Hawai'i Department of Taxation offered people a chance to come clean without having to pay a penalty. The state said some 870 taxpayers came forward with income owed for prior years under its Tax Fresh Start program. More »
